Cultural Implications and Integration When Counseling IPV Survivors During the Stages of Recovery
By: Ashley Harris
Abstract:
The purpose of this presentation is to explore Dr. Judith Herman’s ‘Stages of Recovery’ experienced by victims of trauma, and how these stages apply to Intimate Partner Violence survivors. The stages reviewed are: A healthy relationship, safety, remembrance and mourning, and reconnection. Cultural aspects are of great interest, as culture influences and impacts a survivor’s experience of domestic violence. Additionally, a counselor’s willingness to be culturally aware, will impact the therapeutic relationship. Counselors should be intentional about maintaining cultural competency when providing therapeutic services for survivors, as it is an integral part of treatment. Victims experience abuse differently. It is essential for survivors to have a supportive network with individuals and relationships that are equipped to help them process physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and cultural effects of abuse.
